Fed up with, or not ready for dentures? Some notes about denture replacement with dental implants at Seven Fields, Swindon

By Patrick | August 19, 2008

Fed up with, or not ready for dentures?

If you’re tired of your current dentures moving around in your mouth, and think denture adhesive is bothersome, our denture replacement solution may be right for you.

It may be that your denture moves when you are eating or talking. It could be that you find the denture uncomfortable with it rubbing the gum, or catching the back of your throat.  It may even be an embarrassment when you get passionate.

You may still have a few teeth, but they cannot be saved, and you do not want to have to compromise with your teeth.

In most situations we are able to provide a fixed denture solution by using dental implants. This replaces your missing teeth in a way as close to nature as possible, giving you the confidence and comfort to eat, socialise, and , well what ever you can think of!

Teeth in a day

We have worked for five years in developing a predictable protocol which can offer the teeth fixed 24 hours after the implants are placed, but where we finalise the appearance, aesthetics and comfort once the healing is complete. During this time you continue to enjoy the benefits of the fixed teeth.

Beforefixed teeth denture replacement dental implants swindon

Our first step is to create a conventional denture with the teeth in the positions which we feel will offer the most natural , and comfortable position.

The implants are then placed, records taken and the laboratory performs all the necessary customisation. Next day we secure the fixed teeth.

Although these teeth are satisfactory, over the next three months the gum and the bone mature, and subtle changes in shape occur. The jaw joints may also adapt to the new teeth.

Once everything has matured, we remove the temporary fixed denture and take impressions. We also take records to help establish the most comfortable and efficient bite.

Before you leave the surgery, we refix your teeth, and so, other than when you are in the chair, you are not without your teeth.

Once we are happy with the appearance we can progress to the finish. For this we use the same materials as we would for regular crown and bridge work, i.e., metal and porcelain. This means that the exact shape and colouring of every tooth is individualised allowing for the most natural aesthetics.

We have been involved with evolution of this treatment concept for over five years, and we are familiar with many of the questions related to the treatment, which we hope that we have dealt with them below.

Should there be an aspect which we have not addressed please use the ‘Contact Us’ button, and we would be delighted to help you, or you can take the first step to getting solid fixed teeth, and arrange an initial discussion appointment.

Why choose Seven Fields Dental Health Centre for Dental Implants?

With a combined experience of over 50 years, two recognised Clinical Coaches, an implant surgeon who concentrates solely on this field, and a leading Cosmetic Dentist as Clinical Director, a Gum Specialist, (periodontist) and an oral surgeon,  we offer a breadth of experience which is difficult to match in Wiltshire, let alone Swindon.

We have experience of over 4000 implant placements, and currently for full arch replacement we have a 100% success rate both in implant survival, and restoration survival.

 Does it hurt?

For full arch work we recommend intra-venous sedation, in addition to local anaesthetic, and with the combination of these two, there should be no discomfort at all.

Afterwards, you may need to take a couple of normal painkillers, such as ibuprofen, or paracetamol that evening, and perhaps the next day.

Does it always work?

Like anything biological there can always be aspects of treatment which do not go exactly as planned. This is where the experience comes to play. For full arch treatment, we have a 100% success rate. (For our single tooth cases, we did lose a single implant, but we were able to replace it with another and restore it)

As part of the package we provide insurance for the first year to cover any problems. Should you wish this can be extended)

How many implants do I need?

By following a very strict protocol, we can restore your mouth with as few as four implants, although sometimes we will place five or six per jaw.  Using fewer implants has been shown to have the key advantages of the same success rate, fewer side effects, and an increased number of suitable cases.

 How much does it cost?

Although every case may be fractionally different, the prices are in the region of  £15,000-17,000. The difference depends on if we are able to place the immediate teeth.

Can you always place immediate teeth?

In order to place immediate teeth, we need the implants to have a certain stability as they are placed.  If we do not get this, then we do not take the risk of placing immediate fixed teeth, but instead fit the previously prepared denture.  We would still be able to proceed to the final teeth in three months. In over 80% of cases we are able to use the fixed teeth.

When are the immediate teeth placed?

Rather than having finished teeth which are made to fit the implants, we take records on the day of the surgery, and the next day, the laboratory have done the final customisation, and the teeth can be fitted.  This does mean a single 24 hour period when you are without teeth.

Is everybody suitable?

The techniques which we use do allow us to treat the vast majority of people. There are times when we are not able to, due to very little bone, or some medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes.  We can discuss alternative treatments in these circumstances.

Try Cosmetic Dentistry Before You Buy. LA to Swindon

By Patrick | August 16, 2008

recommended cosmetic dentist swindon wiltshireBefore you change your smile, you want to know what it will look like when you have finished.  This is where two important techniques can help you

The Trial Smile

Given our pre-eminence in Cosmetic Dentistry in Wiltshire and Swindon, it is not unusual for us to offer pioneering techniques. Where any changes are likely to result in making the teeth bigger, we actually try in your mouth a mock up.

Here is a case to help you understand.

This person wants cosmetic dentistry and is happy to travel anywhere in the Wiltshire area to get it, and has ended up in Swindon!

We take impressions and make a model

On this model we make  a mock up of the proposed cosmetic dentistry changes using white filling material.

These minature dental veneers are taken off the model

These can then be tried on top of your teeth to allow you to judge the results, and all before a drill has been taken out of the drawer!

 Computer Simulation

In our second method, where we may be altering the teeth by making areas smaller, we resort to computer trickery.

We take a picture of the current dental situation, and e-mail this to a specialist image lab in California.  We then describe the cosmetic dentistry we require, and they e-mail it back to Swindon.

Here is a recent example

Our patients find that this is a fantastic way to see just how dramatic the results can be.

We can also perform conventional wax-ups, which are a three dimensional mock up based on models of your teeth, and with examples from the  variety of cosmetic dental cases we have treated, we can give you a firm ideas of what can be achieved with dental crowns, veneers, bridges, dental implants, or the myriad of techniques available to us.

So if you would like to know just what we could do for you, please just give us a call or an e-mail, and you can soon know exactly what can be done, before you commit to it.

White Fillings

By Patrick | July 26, 2008

One of our patients asked us about the difference in the life expectancy of white fillings compared to the old amalgam fillings.

As we have mentioned before, you need to have a dentist who keeps on top of the literature to make sure you get appropriate modern dentistry.

A study out last year showed, that after 10 years white fillings were actually outperforming silver fillings, if they were placed properly.  One of the key techniques critical to success is the use of rubber dam.

cosmetc dentist in swindon white filling

Rubber dam, or dental dam is a technique where your teeth poke out through a sheet of rubber, which is the size of a small tissue.  From your point of view it stops all the bits and pieces going down the back of the mouth.  From our perspective, it keeps the tooth dry as we stick the filling to it.  This is critical to its success. We are fortunate that Dr. Patrick Holmes has actually provided post-graduate training on its use

 swindon dentist white filling

You can see just how natural the results can be for your teeth.  Another key advantage is that we can often use these fillings in situations where we would have had to crown teeth in the past.

Ignoring you gum problems may result in you loosing some teeth altogether. Plaque is the cause of gum disease. If it is not removed from your teeth and gums it results in the plaque maturing and causing tooth decay and gum disease.

It is essential that plaque is removed daily to keep your mouth healthy. Your toothbrushing needs to be accurate and it is also extremely important to clean between your teeth as well. Don’t ignore these areas between the teeth as it is often the first site that gum disease will develop.

If you have any concerns regarding your gum health come and see Patrick and he will assess your mouth and refer you to the Hygienist or our Periodontist ( a specialist in gum problems) to get you back to optimum gum health.

Gum Disease and its link to Heart Disease in Swindon

By Debs | July 25, 2008

A recent study has found a link between heart disease . A study done in France has found that after evaluating 131 heart patients there was a direct link between the severity of the gum disaese and the severity of the heart problem.

In another study in America samples were taken from 657 people. They found that signs of atherosclerosis were present in those who were carrying the bacteria responsible for causing gum disease as well.

Another study carried out on 161 people also discovered that those with gum disease were 6 times more likely to suffer from chronic heart disease.

So our aim at Seven Fields is to get your gums healthy and keep your body healthy too.

Teeth and Gums in Swindon

By Debs | July 25, 2008

Many people regard gum disease as a problem with their teeth. Gum disease is in fact an infection which can release bacteria into the blood stream. This in turn can lead to additional health problems for those patients who already have a health risk such as diabetes and heart problems.

Gum disease is caused by bacteria which accumulate around the teeth and gums. These bacteria produce toxins which, in turn cause inflammation, bleeding. If your gums bleed when you brush you will probably be suuffering from some form of gum disease. Precise toothbrushing around teeth, crowns, implants and the gum margin is essential to maintain good healthy gums.

Gums should be pale pink, stippled and free from any bleeding.

If you feel you may be suffering from gum problems come and see us at Seven Fields where we can assess you fully and tailor cleaning and toothbrushing to your specific needs

The Best Cosmetic Dentisty in Swindon

cosmetic dentistry dental implant missing teeth

This image shows how we replaced a front tooth using a dental implant.  Going back to a previous post. Is this cosmetic dentistry or aesthetic dentistry.. you decide.

As we mention on the main site, we have a simple aim; we want to be the best in each of the dental fields in which we provide a service.

Our latest news is in the field of cosmetic dentistry.

Our clinical director Dr. Patrick Holmes already has gained Full Membership of the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry, one of fewer than 50 dentists to have done so and is involved in lecturing on cosmetics for dental companies and one of the London Dental Schools.

The News

Our exciting news is that Patrick Holmes has been selected for the Certificate in Advanced Aesthetic Dentistry Course  at the Eastman Dental Institute.  This is the first official cosmetic or aesthetic dental qualification in the UK, and it is a major achievement to get through the selection process and make ot to the final 20 places. The course director is one of Americas leading cosmetic dentists.

We feel that our cosmetic dentistry is already exceptional, but dentistry is constantly changing, with new techniques and materials.  This opportunity will help us maintain the commitment to providing not just the best cosmetic dentistry in Swindon, but also in the UK.

Amazon, ITunes E-bay, and Teeth!

By Patrick | July 18, 2008

I was listening to Tom Peters talk about customer service, (its not just the dentistry we want to get correct), and he was talking about the ultra fast services of the modern web based commerce. It got me thinking about our cosmetic dentistry here in Swindon, and how it might compare to some of the work you see done on programs such as 10 Years Younger.

Can we match the speed of the web?

We can be pretty sharp about getting patients in and sorted…this week a phone call from a patient, his son is getting married in 12 days time, can he get his front tooth fixed.  Seen yesterday, tooth prepared today, visit to our technician today, will be fitted before the wedding.  This was relatively simple as it only involved a single tooth and the gums were fine.

Many of our treatments take a lot longer.  Why?

Over to Swindon Cosmetic Dentist Patrick Holmes

“ We perform our treatments as quickly as we can, let’s face it no-one wants to be in a dental chair, even in a practice as elegant as ours. Over the years, by concentrating on very specific areas of dentistry, we have honed our skills and this means we have the knowledge to put a vast amount of detail into our work.

The second important reason, is that modern cosmetic dentistry should not be rushed.  One famous cosmetic dentist, Denis Tarnow said ‘The bone sets the tone, but the tissue is the issue’. Okay, not exactly Shakespeare, but what Denis was saying is we need the gums to be correct for any of our work to look nice.  The biological issues of cosmetic dentistry cannot be rushed.”

Photographs of cosmetic dentistry by Patrick Holmes Seven Fields Swindon Wiltshire

Please note this is NOT the final cosmetic dental work

These photographs show a tricky dental cosmetics case.  The patient damaged the front tooth many years ago, and the root cannot be saved, even with a combination of of the skills of our endodontist and periodontist.  These guys are skilled, but not magicians!

Now image being 18 and facing the world with no front tooth, or a denture.  We are using our adhesive techniques here, and what you can see is a temporary bridge  a month after the hopeless tooth was removed.  We have had to adjust if to train the gums, and alter their shape from the pre-operative situation to the natural aesthetic position they are in now.  We will let this mature for a further 2-3 months, before we place the final bridge.

Is it worth the effort?

When you see a patient who has previously been covering their mouth with their hand, walk into the surgery and give you a big, confident smile, you better believe it.

Now onto Amazon to order a book!

Cosmetic Dentistry in Swindon/Hollywood

By Patrick | July 16, 2008

A question we have had

What is the difference between cosmetic dentistry and aesthetic dentistry?

In a nutshell, with cosmetic dentistry we try to make the teeth look absolutely perfect.  Very straight, and very crisp and white, the sort of look you would expect from a Hollywood star.

(Cosmetic dentistry by Patrick Holmes, Seven Fields Swindon, Wiltshire)

This photograph shows the front six teeth with a combination of dental crowns and dental veneers.  This shows the cosmetic approach

With Aesthetic dentistry, we want to create a natural appearance, that is attractive, but the teeth will be left with a hint of crowding or spacing for example.  Friends should think that you are lucky to have nice healthy teeth.

This photograph shows the two front teeth treated with dental veneers in an aesthetic manner.

We hope this answers the question, but keep them coming
